  1. How to make Potassium Nitrate                   by The Jolly Roger
  2.  
  3. Potassium Nitrate is an ingredient in making fuses, among other 
  4. things. Here is how you make it:
  5.  
  6. Materials needed:
  7.  
  8.  -3.5 gallons of nitrate bearing earth or other material
  9.  -1/2 cup of wood ashes
  10.  -Bucket or other similar container about 4-5 gallons in volume
  11.  -2 pieces of finely woven cloth, each a bit bigger than the 
  12.   bottom of the bucket
  13.  -Shallow dish or pan at least as large in diameter as the bucket
  14.  -Shallow, heat resistant container
  15.  -2 gallons of water
  16.  -Something to punch holes in the bottom of the bucket
  17.  -1 gallon of any type of alcohol
  18.  -A heat source
  19.  -Paper & tape
  20.  
  21. Procedure:

  23.  - Punch holes on the inside bottom of the bucket, so that the 
  24. metal is"puckered" outward from the bottom
  25.  
  26.  - Spread cloth over the holes from the bottom
  27.  
  28.  - Place wood ashes on the cloth. Spread it out so that it covers 
  29. the entire cloth and has about the same thickness.
  30.  
  31.  - Place 2nd cloth on top of the wood ashes
  32.  
  33.  - Place the dirt or other material in the bucket
  34.  
  35.  - Place the bucket over the shallow container. NOTE: It may need 
  36. support on the bottom so that the holes on the bottom are not 
  37. blocked.
  38.  
  39.  - Boil water and pour it over the earth very slowly. Do NOT pour 
  40. it all at once, as this will clog the filter on the bottom.

  42.  - Allow water to run through holes into the shallow dish on the 
  43. bottom.
  44.  
  45.  - Be sure that the water goes through ALL of the earth!
  46.  
  47.  - Allow water in dish to cool for an hour or so
  48.  
  49.  - Carefully drain the liquid in the dish away, and discard the 
  50. sludge in the bottom
  51.  
  52.  - Boil this liquid over a fire for at least two hours. Small 
  53. grains of salt will form - scoop these out with the paper as they 
  54. form
  55.  
  56.  - When the liquid has boiled down to 1/2 its original volume let 
  57. it sit
  58.  
  59.  - After 1/2 hour, add equal volume of the alcohol; when this 
  60. mixture is poured through paper, small white crystals appear. This 
  61. is the posassium nitrate.
  62.  
  63. Purification:
  64.  
  65.  - Redissolve crystals in small amount of boiling water
  66.  
  67.  - Remove any crystals that appear
  68.  
  69.  - Pour through improvised filter then heat concentrated solution 
  70. to dryness.

  72.  - Spread out crystals and allow to dry
